Polokwane like most South African small towns is a town bursting at the seams with small eateries located strategically on the side of the road offering traditional food to the working masses in the towns CBD. These eateries flued by the loyalty of their clients provide an alternative to the everyday takeaway with their no frills approach to food that can be found at any good African gathering across the country.

Zwashu at number 17A Landrous Maré is the new kid on the block, they have taken the same authentic African cuisine offered by the street ventures and have given it a sophistication and elegance that has found them standing head and shoulders above their competition. Their quaint elegant decor and their friendly service leaves one feeling at home. Reminded of warm days spent at grandmother’s house with all the cousins, uncles and aunts. Zwashu is a taste of home done with flair and care. They have taken the experience of an African home and translated it successfully into their restaurant. Zwashu is African cuisine taken to a whole new level. On their menu you will find pork trotters, tripe, ox head, ox tail and dumpling, served with vegetables done the way it was done at my grandmother’s house.

For anyone looking for an experience that is filled with nostalgia this is the place to visit. It is an easy chilled lunch on busy work days and the ideal place to bring friends on lazy Sundays, a place to chill on Saturday as you get the car washed. As Zwashu positions itself to becoming a Polokwane landmark and becoming the place to see and be seen in this small town in the fashion of Chaf- pozi in Soweto or Mzoli’s in Cape Town, I look forward to the experiences one can have there and the memories that can be created with this great place set as the back drop.
